Dorothy on the Kansas Prairies by TheHermitage Dorothy on the Kansas Prairies by TheHermitage
"Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife...Not a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of flat country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions. The sun had baked the plowed land into a gray mass, with little cracks running through it. Even the grass was not green, for the sun had burned the tops of the long blades until they were the same gray color to be seen everywhere...When Dorothy, who was an orphan, first came to her, Aunt Em had been so startled by the child's laughter that she would scream and press her hand upon her heart whenever Dorothy's merry voice reached her ears; and she still looked at the little girl with wonder that she could find anything to laugh at....It was Toto that made Dorothy laugh, and saved her from growing as gray as her other surroundings."

Pen and Ink, Watercolor on stretched Arches 140 hot press.

I really love this version of Dorothy. She looks so innocent. And is she by any chance reading The Wizard of Oz? :D

Wonderful work! The Oz books were among my first literary loves as a child, and it's fantastic to see an artist going back to them instead of riffing off the movies. (The classic film isn't bad, but let's face it: it doesn't tell the same story.)

This looks lovely! It's amazing that you painted Dorothy in Kansas, because most of the time you see paintings or drawings of her in Oz with her friends. Here you have her at home: the place she tries to go back to the whole time when she is in Oz, and you can see why she is so happy there - even if Kansas is described as an dull place. You made us see the real Dorothy, the one before she got wisked away to Oz, and that is beautiful. :aww:

What a wonderful interpretation - great texture, flow, style and storytelling - all of the elements of the Oz story you incorporated are brilliant touches: the woodsman's axe, the hay in the feilds, the bucket behind her...congratulations on a spectacular illustration!! :)

That's hilarious so many people think this image is similar in style to Rackham - that was totally my thought as well!! I believe this style of art was from the golden age of illustration. Good on ya mate, keep the old techniques alive:)

Absolutely great detail work. But I must admit that the outlines of the cloudes cause a bit of damage to the whole picture . They look as if the came out of an animated cartoon. You should imo have worked with as less outline as possible (maybe just a thin pencilled line) to litterally underline the airiness and distance of the clouds.

The details in this painting make it for me, like the hairs on Toto's back and the way his tail wags, the grass and the clouds. All of it, especially Dorothy's face, have a different feel to them than one normally sees these days, which I like. Her chin and eyes interest me in particular. Lovely painting. :]
